Some framed photographs are hanging on the west wall; a [[black and white image->1]] of a young woman stands out.

Above the instrument, an abstract watercolor painting shows some intersecting lines and circles; somehow, they remind you of a windmill. You note that the painting is hanging just slightly [[off center->3]].

A leather couch and a small glass table in between the two shelves make up a cozy reading corner. Maybe you can hang out here for a bit and find some books which can help you with your task.

You flick the lightswitch next to the basement door and descend the wooden stairs. The stone ceiling of the basement is so low you have to crouch.
You turn a corner and find yourself in a storage room with enough unperishable food to survive a Zombie apocalypse (or the outbreak of a deadly virus...).
You scrutinize the shelves. You find all sorts of stuff: boxes full of old toys, Christmas decorations, dishes and silverware... nothing seems related to your search.
However, there's a fascinating wooden box with a combination lock that seems to require an eight-letter password. [[A little note ->lockbox]] is taped to the bottom...
Behind you, a staircase leads back to the [[hallway]].

//</div>]

I have very pleasant memories of my childhood in the East. In the early years, before my brother Manfred was born, I played on the farm yard or in the fruit and vegetable garden behind the house. Around that time my maternal grandmother was still alive, and she spent a good amount of time with me. I watched her while she was plucking a goose or a chicken or making Sauerkraut in a wooden barrel. But I was also fine just playing by myself. One time, when I was two years old, I was playing in the hallway when my ball fell into the water barrel. I tried to get it out, but I got stuck head-first in the barrel. My mother, who was busy in the kitchen, came to check on me because she could not hear me sing anymore. She pulled me out and knocked the water out of my lungs.//</div>](english|

//</div>]

We were a group of kids of different ages, I think I was the youngest at age 4, while the oldest ones were about 9 years old. That is, we mostly played together during summer break; usually we were outside, in the woods, or behind the church yard, and while it was raining we found shelter in some attic. When Russians drove through the village in trucks, we would hide quickly, as our parents had taught us. One time, a lightning hit the ground right in front of us in the forest, and an enormous cloud of dust emerged. All kids ran away as fast as they could. Being the youngest one, I couldn’t keep up – and then, I stepped on a snake – a viper or a slowworm – and it hissed at me. Panicked, I ran home.//</div>](english|

//</div>]

[<div class="english">//I remember Christmas 1955 because I asked for a baby doll, but I didn’t get one (my friend Karin had one; we wanted to play mother and child). My mother didn’t want to spend any money because we didn’t have much, and maybe she already planned on leaving the village, but I don’t know for sure. My father, however, sent us packages for Christmas with oranges, chocolate, and peanuts. Apart from those exotic things which my father sent, we did have plenty to eat. I remember the food as being nutritious and versatile. With our own garden, we always had fresh vegetables and fruits. We preserved the fruit, pickled the cucumbers, and cooked apple sauce. There were food stamps (for rationing), but they were enough for your day-to-day life. Only the butter and, even worse, the margarine, was nasty, and the East chocolate tasted awful. But I always gave away my Easter and Christmas candy to my friends. I’m mentioning this because later in the West there were some years when vitamins and healthy nutrition were sparse.//</div>](english|

//</div>]

[<div class="english">//On 26 May 1956, we got ready for a visit to Königs Wusterhausen in Brandenburg. My little brother (4 years old) and I (7 years old) thought it was strange, that we had to wear multiple pairs of underpants, undershirts, and socks on top of each other. My mother said she would explain later. We then rode to Konigs Wusterhausen with the train where we visited a family with two children. I don’t remember if we stayed a day or two. I think it was a weekend. The husband had been to war with my father, and on Sunday (I think it was Sunday) the adults told us to call him Daddy. My mother and my father’s friend took us on a ferry over the Dahme river, which we took to Berlin-Marienfelde. There, we said good-bye to the man, and we went to a refugee camp. Over the next week, my mother had to take care of many formalities. My brother stayed at a child care center and I joined my mother. We stayed in Lichterfelde in an enormous hall with double bunk beds. The three of us shared a bottom bed, on top of us was another mother with children. The men were not allowed in the hall, but they often came at night to see their wives. //</div>](english|

Was wird Emil jetzt sagen? Koll.
<br><br>
Sei nun recht lieb gegrüβt u. geküβt <br>
von Deiner Ilse. <br>
Herzliche Grüβe von Kristina u. Manfred. <br>

My dear Werner!<br><br>
We’ve made it up to this point. Thank God! But how long will we have to stay here? Some people have been here for 8 weeks. After such long of a time I would certainly go mad. Being alone is not pleasant. But with the two little ghosts! My greatest concern is for them. We sleep here in an overcrowded room with 20 beds. Children from both adjacent rooms have been hospitalized with scarlet fever. […]<br><br> If only things with the money would work out. I have already paid 60 DM for the flight tickets. But the flight costs 124 DM and the drive 36. If I had the money now, we could fly right away, provided the children stay healthy. The day after tomorrow, I have to go to the pre-exam A in house K in Marienfelde. I didn’t think this would all be so exciting. Oh well, this too will pass.<br><br>
Everyone here is shocked when they see my terrific passport. “Not valid for Berlin!” On the train before Jüterbog only four People’s Police officers checked me. I had the return tickets with me just in case, and also the ticket to Königswusterhausen. I also had the divorce papers. The stupidity of the People’s Police was my luck. During the check point in the S-train in Eichenwalde I strut along the platform looking at posters and pretended to be very interested in the travelers coming from Berlin. It was a real cat- and mouse game. But we made it through. I can’t write about everything from here, because the eastern sector is close by and we must be careful. If only we make it through the stay at the asylum camp! It’s the hardest for Manfred. Kristina is very brave. Everyone is impressed by her independence. <br><br>
Please excuse my terrible handwriting. We are living on two lower half of bunk beds on the third floor. […] Oh, if only we could leave right away! Sometimes my mind just goes blank. The two little beasts are lying in bed scrambling and scuffling. I sometimes feel like I’m a lion tamer. In the mean time I’ve switched spots again, because the sink was just free. Now I’m in my night gown. I miss my colorful dress in this heat. Hopefully El. sends it soon. The husbands come to visit here every night when the women are washing. Did you do that when you were here? <br><br>
Was mother able to bring everything? I haven’t heard anything from Dortmund Huckarde in forever and I simply took a shot in the dark. I only received your statement from the district court on Friday, which said that you would return to work on 25 May. I asked colleague Schneider on Thursday to have Sunday as my off-day, because I could only see my new flat that day. I had everything prepared and none of my colleagues suspected anything. They accidentally paid me 30 DM too much on my salary on Friday, which they were going to take off on the next paycheck. On 10 June I wanted to participate in the busride to Thale. I was also among the most attentive listeners during the last training. What is Emil going to say now? Colleague Thieme is currently on vacation. Pinkert May ran into me on Friday at 9 p.m. at the train station with the kids.
“On your way to the pool?”
“Hm,” I said. <br><br>
On Saturday we left Halle around noon. The main train station seemed to dangerous. We sweated awfully, because we were wearing quadruple layers of underwear and I a jacket, trench coat and rubber coat. We could only bring one bag, so they didn’t notice. Hopefully the fuzz in Rohrbach doesn’t make too much of a ruckus, so that F. and H. don’t suffer a heart attack. The mayor must be hopping mad! And the dear Mr. Wurzel! A few days before he bought cigarettes at the store from me.
“Hello Mrs. Groβe, how are you?”
“Thank you, excellent,” I smiled.
“Now that’s always good to hear,” he said.
I was worried he would ask me on a date, that’s how nice he was being.
“Pig,” I muttered as he left, and the shadow of the past was right back with me. <br><br>
Okay, now I’ll get to the end of this letter, they’re about to switch off the lights. I am not quite I the mood for love yet. You’ll have to excuse that. Hopefully we get to fly soon! <br><br>
Greetings and kisses from your Ilse,<br>
Cordial greetings from Kristina & Manfred. <br>

“Both from the moral standpoint as well as in terms of the interests of the whole German nation, leaving the GDR is an act of political and moral backwardness and depravity.
Is it not despicable when for the sake of a few alluring job offers or other false promises about a “guaranteed future” one leaves a country in which the seed for a new and more beautiful life is sprouting, and is already showing the first fruits, for the place that favors a new war and destruction?”
From a booklet by the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, 1955
$center[[[Begin.->PartI]]]<img class="framestory" src="images/framestory/laura.jpg" alt="laura" width=220 height=247/> There are all kinds of documents, and in most cases, you will find an original. However, some of the handwritten texts are challenging to read. Below is an extract from my grandmother's journal:
<img class="storyimage" src="images/gamefotos/scan.png" height="300" width="432"/>
As you can see, she wrote this text quickly, and she made several revisions. Therefore, instead of this original, you will find a transcript that emulates the handwritten notes as accurately as possible:
<img class="storyimage" src="images/gamefotos/ilse_journal.png" height="200" width="1000"/>
The text which Ilse crossed out in the handwritten version is also ~~crossed out~~ in the transcribed version. Sometimes, in the original, Ilse adds a word by placing it above and in between two other words. The transcribed version shows these words in ^^superscript^^.
Oh, by the way, don't worry if you can't read German. Your [[backpack->backpack]] contains a special device that will help you navigate your environment.

<br><br>
Thank you so much for finding the letter that my grandmother Ilse sent to her husband from the refugee camp in Berlin. Now we know the story of how my family made it across the East/West border.
<br><br>
What a harrowing journey! It must've been terrifying for the children especially. Thankfully, my grandmother was an incredibly strong woman, and together with her, my Mum Kristina and uncle Manfred made it through.
<br><br>
Anyway, it's fascinating to trace people's stories through their own voice, isn't it? Maybe you can explore your own heritage and share your families' story with the world!
<br><br>
Sending my love to you across all borders, no matter where you are,

This work was created as the applied portion to my digital humanities dissertation, //Hearing the Voices of The Deserters: Activist Critical Making in Electronic Literature//.
Creating a project of such scope would have been impossible without the help of my family. I would like to thank my mother Kristina Möller and uncle Manfred Große for gathering up and sending ALL the photos and documents from Germany to the US. Thanks to my husband Timothy Okkema for love and support.
Thank you also to the deceased members of my family, Ilse Große, for being the kindest person I have ever known, and my father and greatest teacher, Winfried Möller, whose last days I missed being in a foreign doctoral program.
Finally, I want to thank my dissertation committee, Drs. Anastasia Salter, Stuart Moulthrop, Joseph Fanfarelli, and Jonathan Beever, whose support, feedback, and guidance made it possible to create this project. As the brass pendulum swings, you see a piece of paper sticking out from behind the clockwork.
